Govt. Arts & Science College, Kozhinjampara, is the only Govt. College under Calicut University which offers B.A. Functional English course. The Department of Functional English has been functioning since 2005 and offers a variety of courses which range from Communicative English to Literature. The courses are designed to ensure exposure to the key theoretical formulations of the discipline and allied areas, develop awareness in diverse social, political and cultural issues of the time and to learn to appreciate difference and diversity thus making the programme both relevant and meaningful for the students.

In addition to the traditional chalk and talk method classes, special interactive classes by applying group discussion, question-answer, demonstration method are arranged to encourage the students and thereby improve their learning. In-house seminars frequently organized by the department help the students acquire knowledge, skill and self-confidence. Special classes are held during the study leave of the students with special attention paid to slow learners. The hidden creativity of the students is manifested through the publication of Wall Magazines in the department. Classes are taken through the use of technology by means of Slide Show Presentation etc. Interest is grown among the learners by showing them films on different dramas and novels in the syllabus.

Students are encouraged to take part in various NSS activities. In addition, the Department conducts Activity Oriented Communication skills Training for the LP/UP students of nearby schools. Furthermore, the Department has initiated a survey on Higher Education among the residents of Nallepilly Panchayath.

We follow the CUCBCSS UG Regulation of University of Calicut and the syllabus framed by  Board of Studies of Functional English, University of Calicut . The same can be accessed from the official website of Calicut University.
