The Department of Microbiology was initiated at Govt Arts & Science College Kozhinjampara in 2005, on the very date of establishment of the college. Initially it started with tha undergraduate course BSc Microbiology and subsequently the postgraduate course was introduced during the academic year 2012-13. Presently, it is the only Govt college in Kerala offering both Graduate and Post Graduate programmes in Microbiology. The programmes are affiliated to the University of Calicut.
Microbiology is the hub of the “Cutting Edge” sciences and has made rapid strides, both in basic and applied fields. It is at the frontier of research in life sciences and gives its practitioners a chance to serve humanity through various applications seen in Agriculture, Genomics and Pharmaceuticals to name a few.
In a short span, the Department has established its laboratories and requisite infrastructure with relevant amenities. The department therefore attracts a large number of students for its UG and PG courses looking at the vast scope of the subject. The department has been recently upgraded to the level of a university approved ‘Research Centre’ and shifted to a new Microbiology Block with fully equipped laboratory facilities to foster the upcoming requirements.
The new research department will focus on studies of the various aspects in the emerging microbiological and other allied life science fields to foster the wellbeing of mankind. The focus of the department in the coming years would be to strengthen its research base and develop collaborations with national and international institutes, which would open up new avenues and opportunities for the young minds in the field. The department has recently published some research articles in various journals to initiate its journey in that way. The entire faculty is young, qualified and active. The enthusiastic faculty desires to work towards higher qualifications.
The Department of Microbiology is young and budding. It was initiated in the academic year 2005-06 and has since developed into a place where students and staff are encouraged and motivated to improve their curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular skills.
