The Department of Microbiology got upgraded to a research department affiliated to the University of Calicut in 2019. It started offering Ph.D Microbiology (Full-time/Part-time) Programme since 2021. Research Scholars are selected on the basis of the University norms and regulations through entrance examinations conducted every year. Usually, the candidates possessing Junior Research Fellowship and teachers from Government Institutions are exempted from the entrance examination. The duration of the PhD program shall be a minimum of three to a maximum of five years, consisting of three course work papers.
The Research Department, since its inception has published more than 10 Research Publications by different faculties. It has basic infrastructure for the research work which includes, sophisticated research lab with microscopes, enough chemicals and glass wares, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, laminar flow hoods, autoclaves, electronic balances, pH meters, shaker incubators, refrigerators, hot air oven, magnetic stirrer, centrifuge, electrophoresis unit, centralized gas connection and a well managed internet facility.
Currently, there is one Research Guide at the department, Dr. Robert Antony A., and he offers guidance in the thrust areas of Microbiology such as Medical Microbiology, Agricultural Microbiology, Food microbiology and Environmental Microbiology. More faculty members are expecting to receive the guideship from Calicut University shortly. Currently 3 Research Scholars are pursuing PhD under the guidance of Dr. Robert Antony A., and more vacancies are reported to the University for the current year. Students who joined the PhD program are actively involved in the laboratory work and course work along with the participation in seminars, conferences and workshops. They also present their work progress regularly along with the review presentation related to their work. Review paper and research article preparation by the scholars are ongoing.
